What Does Dementia Care Mean?

Dementia is a condition that affects many older people and causes issues with the brain including memory loss, speech impairment and critical thinking. Individuals that suffer from dementia can often find it difficult to carry out daily tasks and can lack confidence in themselves, so they need the right care and support.

It can often be difficult to understand when the right time is to transition an individual living with dementia into a care home, but our compassionate team are on hand to support you with your decision. At Valerian Court Care Home in Oxfordshire, we offer a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for our residents, and our team is dedicated to making sure residents can continue to live their lives to the fullest while alleviating any stress or frustrations.

Dementia Care FAQs for Our Care Home in Oxfordshire

Common signs that suggest a loved one may be living with dementia can include increasing forgetfulness, a lack of personal care, becoming confused about time or place, struggling with everyday tasks, or showing changes in mood or confidence. You may also notice that they become more withdrawn, lose interest in activities they once enjoyed, or forget to take their medication.

If you have started to notice several of these changes, it may be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional, as early support and guidance can make a real difference. At our care home in Abingdon, we understand the impact this can have on residents and their families, and we are here to offer reassurance and compassionate care every step of the way.

Prior to a resident moving into Valerian Court Care Home, we conduct consultations involving both the resident and their family to ensure we can cater to their specific needs. We work closely with our residents and their loved ones to understand their daily routines, interests, and preferences, all of which we then incorporate into their care plans. Our approach to care is centred around the individual, striving to help residents maintain their independence and dignity while also providing them with continuous support.

At Valerican Court Care Home, we implement a wellbeing programme for all residents, encompassing both collective and one-on-one activities and therapies. For instance, we hold regular arts and crafts sessions, music therapy, reminiscence activities, and more. These activities and therapies are tailored to enrich the physical, cognitive, and social well-being of every resident, including those living with dementia.
