Wreath Laying For D-Day

a D day wreath laying ceremony

Valerian Court was truly honoured to take part in a very special event this June, as part of the D-Day 81st anniversary commemorations held in Harwell.

The event was hosted by the Harwell branch of the Royal British Legion and brought people together to mark 81 years since the D-Day landings. It was also the official unveiling of two remarkable tributes to the men and women who served. The new Harwell Memorial Stone and the striking Horsa Sculpture were inspired by the wooden gliders that left Harwell the day before the landings in Normandy. Our residents, team and wider community were deeply moved to be included in such an important moment in local and national history.

Valerian Court was invited to lay a wreath on behalf of all our residents, and we were proud to be represented by Olga. Olga is a well-loved resident at Valerian Court, and it meant so much to her to be asked to lay the wreath. It was a moment of great dignity and remembrance, both for her and all those who watched on.

Olga’s granddaughter was also taking part in the parade representing the Army Cadets, which added to the warmth of the occasion. Seeing two generations take part in a ceremony that connects the past with the present was incredibly special. It reminded us of the ongoing importance of remembrance and passing down stories and values to younger generations.

The day itself was one of reflection, gratitude and pride. Residents and team members from Valerian Court joined the wider community in paying their respects, sharing stories and memories and honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Taking part in the D-Day commemorations reminded us why we place such importance on community engagement and meaningful activity at Valerian Court. It was a privilege to be involved and we are grateful to the Harwell RBL Branch for including us. To learn more about our regular activities or exceptional care, get in touch and book a tour.
